We left Benodet with a good weather forecast to reach L'Orient. Just half an hour was all we needed to be reminded of the fallibility of those daring enough to predict the weather. Barrique was crashing into quite a head-sea, not the sort of conditions we wished to endure with two small children aboard. By turning east we rode the waves much more comfortably and were headed in the right direction for Concarneau.
Our friend Hazel, who has sailed with us before on two occasions, had flown out the previous day and was waiting for us in L'Orient. Fortunately for us, Hazel's friend Monique, who lives in L'Orient was willing to drive her up the coast to meet us. We had a few hours to finish readying Hazel's cabin and generally tidy up. Little did we know that she and Monique were sat in a café overlooking the marina watching us beavering away!
Together we all wandered into the walled mediaeval town and ate ice-creams in the shade. Chiara rather liked my chocolate and Monique seemed pleased with American gum flavour! I had very poor recollection of Concarneau and both Chris and I were surprised by the size of the more modern side of town. New trees and flower beds were evident and the harbour area looked prettier than I remembered.
